Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
what is Kobold's Kitchen?
Kobold's Kitchen is a board game lounge and restaurant. We are open 7 days a week and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our board game library has 800 games for customers to play. You can play at Kobold's Kitchen, or you can become a Member and rent board games for at-home play for up to two weeks.
What kind of food do you serve?
All sorts! Our menu is inspired by global comfort foods. The idea is that you can get something comfortable and familiar, but if you're feeling adventurous, you can try something new that you know is beloved by another culture. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Come to us for coffee, boba, smashburgers, bánh mì—whatever strikes your fancy.
Do I have to play board games?
Nope. If you just want to come for a drink, snack, or meal, be our guest.
Do I have to Order Food?
You can come to just play board games, but you'll pay a small fee to reserve the table. This way, you have dedicated space to play—and a Gametender to make recommendations and help you get started. Reservations are priced based table size and are offered in 1.5-hr and 3-hr increments.
Can I work remotely from Kobold's Kitchen?
We'd prefer you didn't. Kobold's Kitchen is a place of play, not work. There are plenty of great establishments in the Grand Rapids area that welcome remote workers. Come to us after you clock out. ;)
Can I play games and eat food at the same time?
Yes! We have plenty of space in our dining area for people to eat and play simultaneously. If you haven't reserved a table, though, you'll be better off selecting a game from our "Play While You Wait" collection at the counter—these games are designed to be a quick, fun diversion while you wait for your order. If you want to settle in for some serious snacks and game time, we recommend reserving a table. However, as long as tables are free, walk-ins for both food and games are always welcome.
What types of board games do you have?
All kinds. Dodeca Games is our parent company and the supplier of our board game library. We've organized our library into 14 unique genres to help you find exactly what you're looking for. And be sure to ask our Gametenders for help—they've got expert recommendations to match any taste.
What is a Gametender?
A Gametender is a board game expert. They're available at Kobold's Kitchen to recommend games and teach you the mechanics. They'll help you set up the game and get going in no time. Be sure to reserve a table to guarantee a Gametender is available to help you.
Can I Buy Board Games?
We have a few board games available to purchase outright, but for now, most of our library is only available to rent. We hope to be able to provide a greater library of board games to buy soon— subscribe to our newsletter to get updates on when that happens.
How do I rent board games?
Only Members can rent board games for at-home play. For just $20 a month, you get access to our entire rental board game library. Once you're a Member, there are two ways to rent board games:
- Stop by and talk to our Gametenders; they'll get you checked out with a rental in no time.
- Order online and stop by to pick up your game(s).
Do I need to tip?
Tips are not required. We are proud to pay our staff a living wage. You are more than welcome to tip if desired to reward outstanding service, but it is not expected.
Is there Parking?
We have some parking spots in a lot behind our building, as well as available street parking on the side streets around Kobold's Kitchen. We're also right next to the Plainfield/Hollywood bus stop, and the sidewalks in Creston make us an easy destination to walk to.
Are you Having trivia/Dnd/Magic/etc?
Not at this time. We love these communities and want to provide a great place to play, but we also want to be the place you go to check out games you may not be familiar with yet. Follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know when we start having game-specific events.
